How to transfer songs from your ipod/iphone to your computer

Recently we had a case where we could not retrieve our customers music from their back up.  With the feeling that all hope was lost, she pointed out that all of her songs were on her Ipod and she was wondering if we can just take them off of there. Having done this in the past, I knew that it was possible but in the past it was really hard to do and I wanted a program that could make this a little less painful.

The program that we found and have come to love is called Iphone Explorer.

With Iphone Explorer we were able to find the music folder and transfer it back to the computer. One thing to understand is that the files have no meaningful name and neither do the folders. But if you import them into Itunes and make sure that you have enabled the option to let Itunes manage your library, they will all get their names and folders back. This is also only one use case, you can use this to store files on your ipod/iphone that you could not before as well.

You can find Iphone Explorer at http://www.iphone-explorer.com/

How do you measure a computer technicians ability

I got a call today from someone who needed some work done on an Acer laptop. She asked if we were Acer certified, to which I said no and I do not know anyone who is. She was questioning weather we could even work on Acer laptops if we were not Acer certified.

While I understand her concern, I did want to point out what Authorized service centers can do for you and weather you should call one or not.

Authorized service centers are only necessary when you need to get Warranty work done. This means that they can fix your computer for free and will get paid by the manufacturer.

If you need your computer repaired after the warranty or the warranty is void you can call any tech. In fact, if you ask a local shop if they are Acer certified and they say yes, chances are that they are just saying that. All computers have almost the exact same parts and once you learn one really well, you know how to fix them all.

So the question is how do you measure a technicians ability?

You want to question their time in the field and perhaps ask where they have worked before. There is  an industry certification called A+ and most computer techs will try to get it at some point in their careers. If they do have the A+ it only grantees that they can read and you must probe for more information about their past experience.

I like to think that I have some good experience so I will share it with you and maybe it will give you a base line.

I have 10 years of actual professional computer repair experience. This does not include working on my friends and family pcs when I was a teenager, it starts from the first day that I was hired to be a tech for a company. I worked for the largest national computer service provider for about 7 years then I moved on to work on more technical systems at one of the big 3 car manufacturers as we ll as the US Army and a major University in Michigan. I do have my A+ certification as well and have hundreds of happy customers if you need a referral.

You should be fairly certain that a tech with my qualifications will be able to take care of your problem. I dont want to toot my own horn just want to give you a base line of what I think a good tech should have.

    Here are the bullet points:

    Must Haves

    • More than 5 years experience as a tech for a medium to large company
    • Worked for at least one company that you have heard of
    • Willing to show referrals

    Nice To Haves

    • A+ Certification

USB 3.0 is out and about

The USB standard has come along way since 1996, when it was first introduced.

USB 1 started at around 12Mb per second, this means that it would take 25 seconds to transfer one song to your Ipod. Luckily USB 2.0 came around in 2000 giving us 480Mb per second meaning that a song could be transferred to a device in about a second. This is the standard that we are used to but we want to put higher quality audio, photos, and videos on our devices so we need a new standard and we now have one.

USB 3.0 was introduced about 2.5 years ago and is just now getting out into the world. USB 3.0 is 10 times faster than USB 2.0 so you will be seeing transfer speed of 3.2Gb per second.

The devices and cards have just started coming out so you can retrofit your current computer, but we should start seeing new pcs come out with the new standard very shortly. Once the new pcs have the ports, we should start seeing Ipods that support USB 3.0 and you will be able to transfer music in a snap.

I am pretty excited about this, how do you feel?

Here are some USB 3.0 devices and cards that you can buy today. Keep in mind that USB 2.0 devices will work with USB 3.0 cards.
