USB 3.0 is out and about

March 4th, 2010

The USB standard has come along way since 1996, when it was first introduced.

USB 1 started at around 12Mb per second, this means that it would take 25 seconds to transfer one song to your Ipod. Luckily USB 2.0 came around in 2000 giving us 480Mb per second meaning that a song could be transferred to a device in about a second. This is the standard that we are used to but we want to put higher quality audio, photos, and videos on our devices so we need a new standard and we now have one.

USB 3.0 was introduced about 2.5 years ago and is just now getting out into the world. USB 3.0 is 10 times faster than USB 2.0 so you will be seeing transfer speed of 3.2Gb per second.

The devices and cards have just started coming out so you can retrofit your current computer, but we should start seeing new pcs come out with the new standard very shortly. Once the new pcs have the ports, we should start seeing Ipods that support USB 3.0 and you will be able to transfer music in a snap.

I am pretty excited about this, how do you feel?

Here are some USB 3.0 devices and cards that you can buy today. Keep in mind that USB 2.0 devices will work with USB 3.0 cards.

In this article from Mashable a Googler has said that Google is focusing on mobile devices as Destkops will become irrelevant in the next 3 years. He feels that most people will be doing research on their phones and Ipad like devices.

While I agree that should alot of people have smart phones and Ipad like devices, I think they will use their desktops for those long stints. Gamers, for one, cant switch to these devices completely. We will see though. If this were to happen I think it would take more like 5 – 10 years. The smart phone market/network in the US is just not up to par yet and still has a little aging to do before it can replace our main computers.

Besides if this happens in 3 years, I am out of work :) .

What do you think?

IPad Or IFail

January 27th, 2010

The Ipad was announced today and I couldn’t have been more unimpressed with it.

Here are the key features:

  1. No Flash
    • Think about it you wont be able to watch flash video services like hulu on this device?
  2. No Multitasking
    • What if you could have the ability to do only one thing at a time on a computer?
  3. Non Standard Plugs
    • Wouldn’t it be great if you had to have a special adapter to plug anything into this device?

The average person has no need for this whatsoever, you can get a better laptop that does much more for the same price, but the student or doctor might get some great functionality out of this device. The doctor can use it for notes and the student might be able to get their books on it and for college kids this would be a big money saver.

What Say You?

Currently the way that you get this program is by installing it on your pc, mac or apple tv. This, however, is about to change.

At CES 2010 Boxee has announced the Boxee box made by Dlink. The Boxee box will make it so much easier for you to use boxee on your tv. This box will retail for around $200 and will be available in a few months.

Here is a video from Tekzilla talking about it:
